Dental Tips: You shouldn't skip your Dental Appointment

Is your next dentist appointment scheduled? Do you at least know when you are supposed to have your next dental care check up?

Most of us would like to think that we take proper care of our teeth and gums daily, but surveys have shown that much of our population is doing something wrong. One out of seven American are guilty of avoiding the dentist, yet only two thirds of Americans claim to brush their teeth twice a day. And though you may save a couple bucks by avoiding the regular dental appointments, experts claim that such shoddy dental practices will cost you far more later down the road.

Why? Routine dental visits are cheaper than repairing serious dental problems that may have been neglected. Semiannual dental appointments ensure good overall health through both cleanings and regular x-rays. Cleanings remove tartar that may have built over time, while x-ray examinations can show cavities, cancerous or benign masses, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be visibly seen.

On average, seeing a dentist twice a year works well for most people. Few people can get away with fewer visits. Others may need more frequent visits. People with a high risk of dental disease might need to visit every three or four months, or more. This high-risk includes:

  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • People with current gum disease
  • People with a weak immune response to bacterial infection
  • People who tend to get cavities or build up plaque

With all of that being said, now would you care to schedule your next dentist appointment?
